Did you know?
Naegleria enters through the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone, travelling up the olfactory nerves straight into the brain, and feeds on neurons using suction structures called amoebastomes that physically tear pieces off the cells. Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis is ~97% fatal, and the handful of survivors were almost all treated with miltefosine plus deliberately induced hypothermia.
